Is Our Environment Important?

The environment is an important aspect of our world that everyone should be concerned about. It brings life to our civilization and we should all respect it. It is hard today in our world not to pollute our environment. There are so many industries and automobiles that put off so much carbon monoxide that is destroying our atmosphere. We need to work on the 3 R's: reduce, reuse, and recycle. We need to reduce the amount of goods we make and the amount of pollution we are putting into our world. In order to reuse our goods we need to recycle all of our products to save our sources.
Global warming is a huge issue that is changing our environment drastically. People believe that from us polluting the world that we are destroying. This is true. The polar bears in Antarctica are now on the endangered species list because the green house effect has caused most of their ice to melt. The polar bears cannot live without the ice. They are drowning from not having ice to live on.

The Teachings of the Catholic Church on the Environment

In the Bible we are told to take care of the environment. It is our catholic duty to be good stewards of God’s gifts. “The ecological crisis, a common responsibility, peace with God the creator, peace with all of creation" by Pope John- Paul II. This quote compiles the general belief of the Catholic Church. We all share the responsibility of keeping the environment safe and the world clean because everything on the earth is created by God. As fellow creations of God we have to take care of the environment that He put here for us to enjoy and protect. There are five main principles that we are to go by in order maintain a clean earth. If we follow these principles we will soon live in a spotless world.
1.A God-centered view of the world which recognizes human accountability for the fate of the Earth
2.A respect for life that extends to creation
3.A worldview that recognizes interdependence and prompts the common good
4.Don’t be wasteful
5.Economic progress that recognizes the limits of material growth.

groups helping(Santuario Sisterfarm)

A group that is helping to improve the environment is The Santuario Sisterfarm. It is in central Texas and has recently embarked on a mission to create a multiligual, multiracial, multicultural space. They have launched three major projects to advance its goal in cultivating diversity: The Rosay Martin Seed Project, Sor Juana Press, Latina's in the Borderlands and living lightly on Earth. The Santuario Sisterfarm established a publishing press which was named after a mexican nun, scholar, and poet of the seventeenth century. Among establishing a project, they are also publishing a small series of books on topics relating to women, ecology and spirituality. This project is an effort to build a more just and sustainable model of living on Earth based on Latina experience. This project is an idea that the land and human life are all parts of the same ecosystem.
Many of Santuario Sisterfarm's projects are a combination of the empowerment of the local Latina women with the environmental processes."Wherever you're planted,'' says Carol Coston, someone involved in the project,''that's the logical place to start".
This project is a great way to teach others about how to do good for the environment and I believe that it is wonderful!

Christian responsibility to help the environment

As Christians, many of us believe that we have an obligation to help the environment. Kyle Kramer once decided that air conditioning is too luxurious. Feeling as though being constantly surrounded by technology and other man-made things, Kyle thought that not using the air for a while would make him closer to God. In my opinion, this is too extreme. His whole family had to suffer in the boiling hot weather. There are several ways to become closer to God like taking time out of each day to pray, or a quiet walk alone. But putting his wife and children through this is too extreme. I am not sure how that's helping the environment, either. But as Christians, we have some sort of obligation to help the environment, no matter how minuscule. So, whether it's taking five minutes out of your day to pick up trash or devoting your whole weekend to planting trees at the local park, do it.

"How can RCS students and teachers be better stewards of Earth's resources?"

RCS is trying to move forward by recycling our resources. Some teachers and students at RCS have been trying to get our school to recycle. They have brought in recycling trash bins in order to recycle water bottles that we use during lunch. Each day when I pass by the bins, I can't help but notice how our school is working to save the environment. It really makes me happy that our school is preserving our Earth in little ways.

Our school really needs to recycle paper as well. Much paper is wasted daily. Miss Jeffcoat is the only teacher that has bins to recycle paper. I put used paper in my backpack and discard it in Miss Jeffcoats room.

The biggest problem with recycling is getting rid of the waste. It would be nice if the city of Pascagoula would have curbside recyling collections. People do not like to bring their recyclable waste to a distribution center. This inconvenience causes people to just throw it in their regular trash which ends up in landfills.

Rockledge High School, in Florida, has been recongnized by The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). They won the “The America Recycles Day Contest" two years in a row. Their school reuses, recycles, and buys recycled materials. The DEP loves this yearly contest because it encourages the students to use the 3 R's: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
